Parenting Skills - part 2

A meaningful write-up that I came across which can be very helpful for parents, educators and guardians of young children. This was presented in Hindi, but I thought it would be of great help to translate it in English for the benefit of all.

1) Please switch off the television and all other electronic gadgets preferably before 08:00 pm so as to ensure that you spend quality time with your children.

2) Take time to go through the child's school diary to ensure that his day's home work gets done.

3) Take note of the way in which the child performs and presents himself each day and in every activity. Address the areas where the child is unable to perform well, find reasons and help him/her improve without admonishing or criticizing but gently holding his/her hands to success.

4) Your child's fundamental education is very important in his early years to form a solid ground for his/her future.

5) If you are to attend a family function or a social gathering and stay up late until night along with your children, please ensure you return home before 10:00 pm so that the child gets enough rest to be ready for the school next day. Else, request the school for leave permission.

6) Help children wake up early in the morning (05:30 am) and teach them to meditate and exercise in order to have a good day's schedule.

7) Help children inculcate in them the habit of planting trees and saplings and to take care of them.

8) During bed-time, tell your children stories from the panchatanthra tales, Akbar and Birbal stories, Tenali Rama and the others.

9) Every summer, plan a good vacation that suits your budget. This way your children will get familiarized with new places and new people. They will learn and explore.

10) Identify your child's talents and interests. You may know that he is interested in areas such as Music, art, sports, theater or any other areas. Help him improve and find his vocation in the same so that he would enjoy his life throughout.

11) Teach him how to avoid plastic and its products and enlighten him about the environmental hazard caused due to the use of plastics.

12) Ensure that every Sunday a dish of his/her choice is prepared and allow the child to participate in the cooking activity (The child will love this!). This way you teach the child to take responsibility and ownership of the work he/she does.

 13) Every child is rational, inquisitive and scientific. Hence, he/she may ask many questions to which we may not have answers. Do not shun the child away with questions still lingering on his mind. Make effort to find answers and encourage the child to ask questions.

14) To admit your child in a school, do not go by false indicators such as pass percentage, opinions of neighbors, and recommendations of the affluent or the school that fits into your low budget. The best school is the one which provides excellence in education with optimum fees. Remember, you have to incur expenses for the child's higher education at a later stage. So, plan your budget for your child's future.

15) Teach and help children understand the importance of self-discipline and self-esteem and other values and life skills.

16) Do not allow children to use the your mobile phones when he/she is alone. Allow access only only under your supervision.

17) Teach children to read and write on their own with occasional help from you.

18) Allow and encourage children to give you a hand in day-to-day activities such as cooking, cleaning, organizing and other chores that they can participate in.

How to enjoy your summer?

Indeed a difficult topic for someone like me used to the freshness of mountains and not used to sweat and heat, enjoying summer by adapting to a few simple methods and staying positively cool is not very difficult :)
It is mandatory to understand that giving up on physical workouts can not be considered a good option as this can lead to a sedentary life style which can further make your summers worse to tolerate.
List of simple things to do like:
  • Exercising either early morning or evening is a best option.
  • Having a lovely garden in front of your home keeps your surrounding cool.
  • Discipline yourself into drinking at least 2 litres of water per day.
  • Add fruits and veggies to your diet and reduce food containing carbs and fats.
  • A few mudras (yogic disciplines) can also be adapted. E.g: touch the tip of the tongue to the roof of your mouth and inhale. This helps in cooling your body in an instant.
There are many more such tips online to overcome the hot summer. Stay cool and stay positive!!!

Yeh Dil Mange More for the New year!

Vazhakkai Varuval (Method): Slice the raw bananas into thin round slices. Make a paste of the dry masalas (red chilli powder-1/tsp, coriander powder, pepper powder) along with turmeric and salt as required. Apply this to the sliced pieces and allow it to marinate for 5 - 10 minutes.  Deep fry the slices in a pan with little oil. Vazhakkai varuval is a great combination with sambar or rasam sadam (rice)  :)

Masala Macaroni for Breakfast

Simple Plain Dal (Method): Cook toor dal separately with turmeric, salt and little oil. Chop and keep aside onions, tomato, curry leaves and coriander leaves. In a kadai, heat oil and add to it mustard. When mustard splutters, add one whole red chilli, curry leaves, onions and saute. When the onions turn golden brown, add tomato and saute till the tomato becomes mushy. Add the boiled lentil and allow it to thicken according to your preference. Add chopped coriander leaves to the gravy and the all time favourite dal is ready. Serve with rice, chappathis and pooris (puffed wheat bread fried in oil).

Home made Paneer - Simple Recipe

Home made Paneer (Cottage Cheese)
Ingredients: All you need to make paneer at home is 1 liter of Milk, 1/2 lemon. Preparation Time - 30 mins.
Method: Bring the milk to boil, lower the flame and squeeze lime into the milk. Once the milk starts to curdle (that is the water/ whey separates), put off the flame and strain the curdled milk with a cotton cloth. While doing this squeeze it so that the whey (i.e the water) separates from the cheese. The whey can be added to chappathis or any vegetable curry or can be used for kitchen gardening after it has been cooled. Place a grinding stone over the cloth covered paneer so as to remove the remaining water. 1 ltr of milk will make about 50 - 70 gms of cottage cheese.
To increase the quantity, use greater quantity of milk.

"The Calling"

I was inspired to write a note on this topic this morning when I sat down for my personal time of prayer. I was reminded of my first job transition from one human rights organisation (working for bonded labor rescue & rehabilitation) to the other (working for the rescue & rehabilitation of minors in sex work). In the process of discernment, I happened to receive the following advice from a friend who quoted the following scripture Isaiah 61:1 to explain the fact that to discern or to be sure or clear about the calling depended on the "Gifts" that one has received from the Lord and the "Passion to do" which would result in "Effectively doing the will of God".
"The spirit of the sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim Freedom to the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners." Is 61:1
My reflection on the true meaning of "calling" based on the quoted scripture verse meant "No looking back", "making a firm choice to believe that I am in the Right Place", "Move forward and know in your heart that God is working and will do amazing things in and through you". At different times I was reminded that to Trust was the only way. As William Cowper says, "God moves in mysterious ways, His wonders to perform". Simple but powerful thoughts from the daily devotional readings like "What defines us is our deepest desire for God and our capability to reach God", "To include the Lord in our daily routine often results in seeing His divine activity at work",  strengthened me.
Well I had to also remind myself that there is another side or the suffering side to "Doing the will of God" and that is mentioned in 2 Corinthians 1:3-11. Jesus himself was not deprived of it. But in my understanding, it only meant "Doing the Will of God" under "any circumstances" or in other words "COME WHAT MAY!!!".
"Scripture does not tell us that God wipes away our sadness in this Life, but it does tell us that God is faithful and will comfort us."
In the End, I must say, as it always has been, WE HAVE THE FREE WILL. To say "Yes" or "No".
"There is an antidote to our Fears - TRUST".

A prayer of Abandonment to God's Providence - St. Jose Maria Escriva
"My Lord and my God: into your hands I will abandon the past and the present and the future, what is small and what is great, what amounts to little and what amounts to a lot, things temporal and things eternal. Amen"
